Go to:

1. Torts often involve the violation of rights. In these two cases, people filed suit against school districts because they felt that school policies violated their rights to free speech. After reading about the cases on the website, answer the following questions.

Based upon the first case regarding petitions, do you have the right to have a petition in school?

Are your rights to petition in school the same on February 27th, Election Day, as the rest of the year?

In what way was the right to petition restricted in this case?

2. According to the second case, under what circumstances can school officials prevent students from publishing and distributing materials in schools?

What were the precedents cited in this cases?
